The Things Growing in my Garden: Gardening Minions of Final Fantasy 14
I finally have all the gardening minions! Pfew, I honestly never thought, I would ever get them. Mainly because of the awful housing system of FF14 (and let’s be honest I don’t talk to my FC enough to ask for gardening patch use). But after three years in the game, I scored my own house and my own gardening patch.
Mission No. 1 then was to grow all the minions!
Growing them was quite painful though, as they take about a week to be ready for the harvest. And of course, you cannot simply buy the seeds, you have to cross them. So, plan enough time for the whole thing, if you plan to grow them, too.
If you do, maybe this article will make it a bit easier on you.
Getting the seeds
Before you start wasting your weeks with painful intercrossing, do check the market board for cheap seeds. Surprisingly, it is possible to find some of them for only a few Gil every now and then. In my case the Tomato King Seeds were supercheap, so I just snatched them off the MB.
Of the five gardening minons, one has to be crossed while growing the other minions.
To even get the first four minion seeds you need:
3 x Krakka Root Seeds => Just check your local, neigbourhood vendor
1x Broombush Seeds => A painful intercross, by using Nymeia Lily Seeds (see below) and Almond Seeds. Maybe try your luck on MB.
3x Mandrake => If you have a botanist retainer, unlock the seeds and send her/him off. If you have the time, you can also try to get them through harvesting regular Mandrake nodes in Eastern La Noscea, Bloodshore.
1x Garlic Cloves Seed => Either check the MB or cross by using Almond Seeds and Firelight Seeds (both of which can be harvested in Eastern La Noscea, Raincatcher Gully and Middle La Noscea, Summerford respectively)
1x Nymeia Lily Seed => This can be tricky as the price for these, at least on my server, is usually quite high. You need to cross Coerthan Tea Seeds and Mandrake Seeds for this. Coerthan Tea Seeds are, of course, found in the Coerthan Western Highlands. However, they are an unspoiled node, spawning at 10AM/PM Eorzean time, X:31/Y:20. You can get quite a few seeds here with one node though, so if you are around the time the nodes spawn, just make your way over there. Otherwise, send your retainer out.
Generally, Nymeia Lily Seeds sell well, so you might want to try intercrossing them for a time to raise some funds. Also, you need them for your Broombush Seeds.
Growing the minion seeds
Once you have acquired all your seeds, you can finally start to grow your first batch of minions.
I used a graphic from the forums to organize my planting. It worked fine for me, so maybe check it out.
Basically, using Grade 3 Thanalan Topsoil, the plant order would be:
Krakka Root = Broombush = Krakka Root = Mandrake = Nymeia Lily = Mandrake = Garlic Clove = Mandrake => Replace the first Krakka Root, to ensure your chance of an intercross with the broombush.
And then it’s daily tending and fertilizing, whenever you are up to it. As some seeds grow faster than others, you can harvest anytime and replace with fresh seeds (per…perpetual whatever, just do it, when you have the seeds and time).
If all goes well, you should end up with:
Garlic Knight Seeds, thanks to Garlic Clove and Mandrake
Onion Price Seeds, thanks to Mandrake and Krakka Root
Mandragora Queen Seeds , thanks to Mandrake and Nymeia Lily
Tomato King Seeds, thanks to Broombush and Krakka Root
I’ve yielded good results most of the time and essentially got the seeds I needed without any hiccup. There is still some RNG, but I doubt you are going to run in any trouble.
Growing the minions
Now with your minion seeds ready, we can finally start growing them and intercross our still missing Eggplant Knight Seed along the way.
Remember your friendly neighbourhood vendor? Yeah, get five more Krakka Root seeds frome him.
And then just alternate your Krakka Root seeds with your minion seeds, exchanging the first planted Krakka Root again for your maxium chance of intercrossed seeds.
Repeat the tending and fertilizing, replace the Krakka Root seeds halfway through and a week later you should be the proud owner of a Garlic Jester, Onion Prince (my personal favourite), Tomato King and Mandragora Queen. Along the way you should have harvested some Eggplant Knight Seeds as well.
Grow these for another week and your happy Gardening Minion Family is complete.
Other Uses of Minion Seeds
If you have any minion seeds left, you can easily turn them into stuffed versions of the minions and place them in your home. The recipes are all Level 60 (3 Stars) and should be easy to craft for any Weaver past level 60. They make up for cute decoration and usually sell much higher than the actual minion.
And there you go. Enjoy your new minions o/
