Is it common in AE? It’s certainly not common in BE! Grunts and strains implies that the person is exerting a lot of effort to complete a task.
He grunted and strained as he tried to lever the stone into place.
However, maybe it’s just my gutter mind, but grunts and strains in combination makes me think of constipation. Sorry, but it was the first thing that came to mind when I read your post.
