One of our most common questions that we are asked is how to use CBD oil and what dosage should new users take. Since CBD oil is not a one-size-fits-all supplement, it can be difficult to nail down exactly what the best recommendation will be. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help walk you through using your tincture.

1. Choose your CBD flavor.

If you have chosen a tincture as your preferred form of CBD, there are a few questions that you should ask yourself before taking your tincture. Ask yourself — do you want to take an unflavored or flavored tincture? Because tinctures are oil that are taken orally, unflavored tinctures tend to be an acquired taste. If you’re just starting out with CBD, we would recommend trying a flavored CBD oil, like Populum’s full-spectrum orange-infused tincture.

2. Choose your CBD dosage.

Now that you have your tincture, it’s time to figure out your dosage. Since CBD oil is not a one-size-fits-all supplement, it can be difficult to nail down exactly what the best recommendation will be.

We recommend 8 to 8.5 mg of hemp CBD oil per day to start. This amount will vary depending on the CBD concentration you purchased. Here’s a short breakdown of how concentration differs among our full-spectrum tinctures:

250mg concentration: Take a 1ml (i.e. a full dropper) for 8mg of hemp CBD oil. A 250mg concentration is a great option for first-time CBD users. It allows users to adopt the “slow and steady” approach, meaning you can start with very small amounts of CBD oil and dose up to determine your optimal concentration.

500mg concentration: Take .5ml (i.e. a half dropper) for 8mg of hemp CBD oil. The 500mg full-spectrum tincture is Populum’s best seller, and for good reason. It provides all the benefits of the 250mg but double the concentration. As a first-time CBD user, you can easily dose the 500mg up or down.

1000mg concentration: Take .25ml (i.e. a quarter dropper) for 8mg of hemp CBD oil. If you have tried CBD a few times and are looking for something that’s a little stronger, we would recommend trying the 1000mg. While you can still start with a quarter dropper and get 8mg of hemp CBD oil per day, you can also quickly scale up your dosage.

3. How to Take CBD Oil.

If you’re new to CBD, it’s important to know how to use CBD oil. The most effective way to administer our CBD is to take it sublingually, which means under your tongue. Here are 4 easy steps:

Fill up the dropper with your desired oil dosage (see step 2 for recommendations on how much CBD to take when starting your routine)

Squeeze the oil under your tongue but do not swallow

Allow the oil to sit under your tongue for 30 seconds

Swallow the oil after 30 seconds

We recommend allowing it to sit under your tongue for 30 seconds, then use your tongue to distribute the remaining oil to your inner cheeks. This method allows for maximum absorption and helps the supplement enter your bloodstream more instantaneously.

How do you take CBD oil?

It’s funny how the market is flooded with CBD options, but so few take the time to educate on dosage and exactly how to consume it. Whether it’s assumptions that consumers know how to use the product or a measure of leaving it up to each consumer to ‘choose their own adventure’, many people’s first experience with CBD oil is one of annoyance and confusion. Especially after spending so much money.

Why don’t some CBD companies list a dosage? Why is it just telling me how many milligrams of CBD are in the container?

Because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has no official Recommended Daily Intake value (RDI- you’ll recognize this acronym from the back of some packages for items like Vitamin C or Iron). Therefore…there’s no official regulated serving size for CBD.

How do I know how much CBD oil to take? What’s a dosage?

Some companies list a recommended dosage. It could say ‘take two droppers’ or ‘take one teaspoon’. From here you can calculate how many milligrams are in the recommended serving from the company.

Take the total CBD milligrams listed on the bottle and divide by total milliliters in the bottle. Since most droppers hold 1 milliliter of fluid, you can assume the resulting number will tell you how many milligrams are in each dropper.

Example: 300 mg CBD bottle divided by 30 mL= 10 milligrams per dropper

But in general, a dosage, whatever it might be, might not be right for you. Or it might be right for you, but not your friend and therein lies the confusion. CBD works differently for everyone depending on weight, what your focus is for usage (anxiety, sleep, pain, etc), your gender and just how your body reacts to things. It’s going to take trial and error to find the right dosage, and to be honest, that might make people jump ship before they’ve figured out their CBD sweet spot. Even then, throughout your entire life, your dosage needs may shift (hormones change, needs change etc).

As a starting point, start low and adjust incrementally. Don’t move from a CBD dosage of 15 milligrams to 60 milligrams overnight. Take your time to find out what’s just right. Keep going. Keep records. You can definitely figure this out.

The general starting point recommendation for CBD dosages is between 1-6 milligrams of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight and taking into account pain level or other ailment severity.

Example: a 160 pound person might start at a dosage of 16 milligrams but could need 96 milligrams.
