While it is low risk, it is recommended to consult with your veterinarian prior to starting any new health regimen. Current rules do not allow veterinarians to prescribe or dispense CBD products but they are free to talk with you about it as part of a health regimen or what therapeutic benefits it may offer. With large doses of CBD your pet could be sleepier or sedated, these are not permanent effects and will wear off with time. Your pets weight in pounds and severity of their condition will help determine the optimal dose for their size. It is best to start with smaller dosages for pets before moving to a strong dose though. It should also be noted that CBD can interact with some medications and it’s important to discuss your treatment goals with your veterinarian and possible effects.

If you are using full spectrum pet CBD oil it is possible that high doses would contain an amount of THC that could make your pet uncomfortable, for those cases a broad spectrum pet CBD oil would be a better option. Pet CBD should be treated as medicine and kept out of easy reach for them, especially if you’re using a tasty treat. Use our online dosage calculator to find the right effect unique to their body and conditions.

How To Determine Optimal CBD Dosage for Dogs

So, you’ve received your bottle of CBD, now you’re probably wondering “Where do I even start?” Well, we are here to help guide you through the process of finding your pet’s optimal CBD Dosage! Let’s start with this introductory video from our Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Zac Pilossoph:

Thanks Dr. Zac! Now, let’s dive into the basics!

CBD Dog Health tinctures are designed so each dropper contains a benchmark dose that will be effective for most pets. This dosage works for a majority of cases, however to find the optimal CBD dosage for dogs and cats, you may need more or less CBD, depending on a number of factors. (we’ll get to those shortly!)

CBD Dog Health tinctures are applied with a dropper that measures one milliliter of oil (ml). You will notice graduated markings on the side of the dropper that allow for accurate dosing below 1 ml. This allows you to be specific while dosing CBD oil for dogs and cats.

Since we recommend dosage by milligrams (mg’s) – here is a guide to knowing how many milligrams of CBD are in one dropper of each tincture.

CBD Dosage for Dogs, Cats and Pets

The first thing to do when starting a CBD regimen, is spend some time determining optimal dosage of CBD for dogs, cats and pets.

Despite common misconceptions, dosing CBD oil has very little to do with size and weight. Optimal CBD Dosage for dogs, cats, and other pets is most effectively determined with consideration for each animal’s unique physiological condition and health status.

This includes factors such as:

  • Their endocannabinoid system
  • Age
  • Metabolism
  • Disease process
  • Current health and wellness status
  • Other individual health factors

Unfortunately, there is no accurate “CBD oil for dogs dosage calculator.”

Until you start your pet on a CBD regimen, there is no way to be sure exactly how they will react, which makes CBD dosing for dogs and pets not so simple. Sensitivity ranges greatly between dogs and can even change over time based on age or chronic illness.

That’s why we recommend a trial and error method to determine the optimal CBD dosage for dogs, cats and pets. Start low and go slow as you increase dosage and find a stable regimen, monitoring your pet’s response each step of the way.
